Abu Omar As-Seyf

Russian intelligence officials believe Abu Omar As-Seyf represents Al-Qaeda in Chechnya. Officials say he financed the terrorist kidnapping and mass-murder in the town of Beslan. 323 people, including 156 children were slaughtered. 540 more (mostly children) were wounded.

Al-Qaeda is everywhere. We are at war.

"We showed weakness, and weak people are beaten," [Russian President Vladimir Putin] said in a speech aimed at addressing the grief, shock and anger felt by many after a string of attacks that have killed some 450 people in the past two weeks, apparently in connection with the war in Chechnya.

ADDENDUM: There is a radical 'cleric' in the UK who is not outraged at the work of his fellows in Russia. Hey, he's not even upset. His name is Omar Bakri Mohammed. He claims to be the spiritual leader of the extremist sect al-Muhajiroun.

The Mujahideen [Chechen rebels] would not have wanted to kill those people, because it is strictly forbidden as a Muslim to deliberately kill women and children. It is the fault of the Russians," he said.

That's not all. The devout, thoughtful Mr Mohammed, is not opposed to the use of child hostage-taking. How would like this guy for a next door neighbor?

If an Iraqi Muslim carried out an attack like that in Britain, it would be justified because Britain has carried out acts of terrorism in Iraq. . . As long as the Iraqi did not deliberately kill women and children, and they were killed in the crossfire, that would be okay.

Maybe Mr Mohammed should read some of the stories coming out of Russia -- scores of victims had bullet entry-wounds on their backsides...I don't know about you, but this sort of talk does not seem to fit within the ambit of 'free speech'. We will watch for developments with this fellow.

Thanks for the story, (Mr or Ms) Anonymous Commenter.
