Britons...puzzle me

According to this article, Britons prefer Kerry. Surprised? For several years, I have followed the on-line journal of a man I have the utmost respect for. John Copeland exemplifies an aging generation best typified by the English pensioner. He is socially conservative. He is adroit and adept when it comes to fiscal policy. He is, in my opinion, of the 'old school'. When you think of a staid Englishman, Mr Copeland fits the bill. He incessantly laments the decline of 'British' civilisation.

Yet, when it comes to international policy, he has the Michael Moore dysfunction. He sympathises with the Palesinian cause. He backs it up with...thoughtful opinion...which is generally silent regarding the historical position -- and recent experience -- of the Jews. He does not harbour a regard for Tony Blair. And he sees W and his administration as a group of bumbling, hell-may-pay cowboys on the world stage. I believe Mr Copeland is typical of British opinion.

Mr Copeland's daily life conflicts with his larger thought. I don't see much difference between Mr Copeland and many of the Americans I know. There seems to be a serious gap between reality and realpolitik.

I respect him too much to criticise him with abandon. He deserves his well-earned pension, his garden, the pubs, and the life he leads. His journal is, in my opinion, exquisite. He is well-read, and has a large following, but there is that disconnect I cannot overcome...
