Dauphin Island and Hurricane Ivan

Current NOAA projections place the hurricane on a track for Mobile Bay. If it hits there, or to the east or west, is an unpleasant prospect. However, I pray it does not strike Dauphin Island, situated off the west of Mobile Bay.

My hope is a vain hope, based upon nothing more than the simple fact my family has spent several weeks there on vacation. Dauphin Island is a sweet spot of earth, fragile, and resistant to the rampant development that has and continues to sweep up the gulf coast.

Frederic reaped awful devastation from the island in '88. It took years to recover. Outlying islands are no place to be in the face of such awful force.

To those of you along the emerald coast: godspeed.
