Election Season in Palestine

This AP story indicates that over 1M Palestinians have registered to vote in the upcoming election cycle, scheduled to begin this December.

The last Palestinian general elections were held in January 1996. Arafat has repeatedly delayed attempts to hold elections in recent years, arguing that voting would be impossible as long as Israeli troops occupy Palestinian towns and cities.

His critics charged that he was using Israeli occupation as an excuse to avoid elections at a time of growing dissatisfaction with his rule
.

If the elections can go forward in a fair manner (point of digression: if lefties contend fair elections cannot be held in the US, how on God's green earth can they be held in the land of corrupt tyrants like Arafat and his 'cronies' who hold the ignorant belief that Israel must be wiped away?), then there is a renewed hope that the troubles in that land can move to resolution.

I have always believed that, once the Palestinian arab populace denounces, and refuses to tolerate, the actions of terrorists, then the profound distrust between the two sides will swiftly evaporate in miraculous fashion. When that day arrives, the arabs in that part of the world will discover that their neighbor's generosity has no bounds. Bank on it.
