Lasers

This article posted by Professor Bainbridge recounts the recent laser incident involving a commercial airline flight as it approached Salt Lake City International Airport last week. We've read about this before in recent years. I suppose this sort of thing will continue to grow more prevalent in the coming months and years.

Thought: US military forces should employ lasers on each combat rifle in the field. If you can't hit the enemy with conventional ordinance, at least you can blind him. Blind combatants are liabilities, not assets, to their command structure. I can imagine that such a device would expose a sniper's or troopers position, but I don't know that much about powerful lasers to say. How much mass and movement restriction would this add to the combat load?
