Lennon's 64th birthday
John Lennon remains an icon of my (America's) youth. His politics were far to the left, but like many other disaffected artists, I liked him a lot. His sentiment ran so deep, it embedded in the mass psyche. His art, like all true art, transcended ideology (even when the words sometimes did not).
Truth is truth, when it is profoundly poetic. For instance, his song 'Nobody loves you when you're down and out'.
Nobody loves you when you're old and grey
Nobody needs you when you're upside down
Everybody's hollerin' 'bout their own birthday
Everybody loves you when you're six foot in the ground.
Thanks Powerpundit for fleshing his memory this gentle, October day. "You say you want a revolution...well...ya know..."

Hi hunterbird my long expected trancedental answer from Europe, , first of all I am from the Netherlands. My political views are what you call democratic. In Europe we call it left. I've a social democratic opinion.
What I said or asked was an almost retorical question; Do you know the European opinion on the condition of the world?
My answer is that it's bad. Under Bush's governance it has become worse. I remind mind you of the words -if you aren't with us you are against us-. America didn't use UN's security counsil to break the Saddam Hussein regime. There are other examples of US body language.
But what I think (not only me) is that America lost contact with Europe. We used to be an ally. But going your own way, brutalizing Europe on many fronts, it seems that the US is against us. And us is becoming a real power; Russia is more and more a part of Europe like it used to be in the 1900's.
The world would be better off with Europe pulling the strings.
I don't understand why the USA hosts the United Nations if they don't accept it's rulling. If there's one to respect the UN it's their host.
Do you understand?
The worst thing is losing contact; not communicating, not learning from eachother.

Jan, thank you very much for your comments. I've read tomes on the disconnect between Europe and America, and I think your few words are worth all of them. If you do not mind, I'm going to quote you in a near-term post. I firmly believe the US and Europe need the other now. I know we seem to be at bitter odds. My belief is that we are embittered over semantics. The US is as tied to the 1000 year 'modern history' of Europe as is Europe.
