Zero Tolerance & the Civil War

In 1863, a typical era infantryman had to a) have a correctly measured powder load, b) have a lead ball of correct proportion, c) a primer cap, and d) a ram rod to forcefully insert the first two components before a muzzle-loading rifle could ever be fired. That is hardly the status quo in this day of full-metal-jacket, ballistic technology.

However, it's more than sufficient to slam a 'Juvi' with criminal charges today. Scroll to Pine Bush, NY:

"I actually thought it was kind of stupid, at first, when I heard it was about the musket," Phelps said. "I didn't think I'd get arrested over it."

Wrong!

Police Chief Daniel McCann said the replica, which fires blanks, could have been used to fire a projectile."I know this might appear to be a minor thing, but it's not," McCann said. "The musket was found in his car on the high school grounds and could have been used."Phelps, a member of the school's Civil War Club, also was suspended from school for five days.

Common Sense has left the building. Over-reaction is the watchword of the day. And who is to say? Zero-tolerance.
